participants on the course will learn a variety of propagation techniques, and aftercare of propagated plants in our nursery.

Learn how to select ornamental plants, plant them in a garden situation and how to look after them.
Identify a range of ornamental plants, weeds, pests and diseases
learn to select plants and containers for ornamental display
Select indoor plants and manage their care.
Subjects covered on the course
Sowing seeds indoors
Vegetative propagation techniques including root cuttings, stem cuttings, including seasonal variations, leaf cuttings, layering and divisions
Practical skills in ground preparation for seeding and planting; digging techniques, tilth formation and marking out areas
Practical skills in establishing seeds and plants in soil; planting out plug plants, bare root plants, and direct sowing of vegetables and hardy annual flowers.
Planting and care of woody ornamentals; establishment pruning, planting of container shrubs and bare root trees, staking and tying.
Identification of a range of common garden plants, weeds, pests, diseases and disorders, and beneficial organisms
Container growing; growing vegetables and fruit in containers, planting and maintaining plants in containers for ornamental display
Indoor plants; propagating plants, planting and maintenance of indoor ornamental plant displays; artificial lighting, feeding, watering etc.
CLASSES Classes are held in MARLAY PARK, RATHFARNHAM, DUBLIN 16, commencing October 2018 and continuing until the end of June 2019. There will be 15 classes in total.
Participants are required to practice skills in their own time to complement course-time. Where participants lack such facilities at home, participants can practice with The Garden School as a volunteer in the garden.
Format Classes commence at 10am and finish at 3.00pm. Tea and coffee are provided, participants can bring a packed lunch. There is a coffee shop next door.
The focus of the course is on learning. Participants will have informal assessments throughout the course. Attendance records will be kept and participant who attend the minimum requirement of dates will be issued a certificate of completion by The Garden School.
There will be three seasonal Plant I.D. assessments. There will be two assessment dates in Spring and Summer, students will be notified of assessment dates in advance.
If you miss a date, there will be catch up classes available.
