Reduce - pick loose items instead of packaged Refuse - remove plastic packaging that is unnecessary Replace - paper or cardboard can be used instead
Say No to Plastic Packaging
Vegetables and fruits are packaged in plastic to make them visually more attractive to the consumer. Products are packaged in quantities to make consumers purchase more.
The packaging then is either sent to landfill or recycled.
While recycling is preferrable, the production of the plastic in the first place requires valuable resources and energy which produces high carbon footprint. Even the recycling process requires high inputs of energy in the process and also transportation.
Often materials for recycling are exported from Ireland over long distances.
As a lot of this packaging is unnecessary, we think that retailers should reduce the packaging and also offer consumers a choice and offer loose produce that can be taken home in paper bags or cardboard packaging, or without any packaging at all. Do apples, oranges peppers and pears need to be packaged? No they don't. They can be transported home without being damaged and keep just as well, if not better in paper bags.
Leave Plastic At The Till
We have been unwrapping the plastic packaging from our groceries at the till after purchasing the goods. We leave the packaging at the packing area at the tills. We do this so that the stores have to deal with the disposal of the packaging material.
We are encouraging more people to do this too.
If more and more people do this, the stores will respond, and when they realise that people don't want plastic packaging they will stop using it, the customer is always right!
When you do it, be kind to the people working at the tills, apologise to them if it creates extra work for them, but politely and calmly explain to them that you are doing it for the environment.
If you want to encourage others to do this too, take a photo of the plastic packaging once it has been removed, then post it to Titter or Instagram using the hashtag- #LeavePlasticAtThe Till
