We make learning easier!

We at The Garden School believe that students should not have to spend time searching for answers from many different places and that learning is easier and more enjoyable if the course material is well-presented and comprehensive.  Following this belief, we have developed our own course notes and employ visual presentations and garden visits to complete an enjoyable learning experience.

Course material

All course notes are supplied in our Study Packs so there is no necessity to purchase any books. A suggested reading list is included with the first Study Pack.

Course Tutor

The course tutor is Ciaran Burke. He is a qualified horticulturist with many years of experience in horticulture and gardening. Ciaran is a keen plantsman and has been teaching RHS courses for over ten years. The first RHS course in Galway was in 2002 and has been held there each year since. When not lecturing Ciaran also designs gardens, grows fruit and vegetables and gardens at home, propagates plants, gives talks to garden clubs, writes about gardening and photographs gardens and plants. He writes for a number of publications including the Irish Garden and Organic Matters.

Garden visits

Visits to some private and public gardens are a feature of our courses that all students enjoy.  Seeing plants growing in such a location brings the course more alive.  These visits (five in total) are held at weekends and are included in the course fee. Own transport is required for garden visits.

Data CD

There is a CD-Rom featuring photographs and information about plants. There is no charge for the CD and is included with course notes at the beginning of the course.

When is the exam?

The exam is held each year in June at an examination centre in Galway. An exam fee is payable to the Royal Horticultural Society.   And no, you do not have to sit the exam if you decide to enroll with The Garden School.  That is up to you to decide.  Exam fees are not included in the cost of the course.

Who enrols on this course?

People who have completed The RHS Certificate in the Principles of Horticulture or similar level of course, persons with previous experience in landscaping/design/gardening and with some existing plant knowledge. It is ideally suited to interested amateurs or to anyone considering embarking on a career in horticulture or to those who are already working in the horticulture/gardening sector who wish to learn more and obtain a recognized qualification.

Whatever your ultimate goal, whether it is professional or purely for personal enjoyment. Enrolling on The Garden School RHS Level 3 Certificate the Principles of Garden Planning, Construction and Planting is a great place to start getting more from gardening and horticulture.
